When to seek advice
Get to know what is normal for your skin. See a doctor promptly if you notice a new or changing spot, a mole that looks different from your others, or a sore that does not heal. A change does not necessarily mean cancer, but it should be assessed.
You can also discuss your personal risk with a doctor, including any previous skin cancer, family history or significant sun exposure. How often you need a skin check depends on your individual circumstances; there is no single schedule that suits everyone.
What to expect at your skin check
Your doctor may ask about the spots that concern you, your medical history and your skin-cancer risk factors. They may examine an individual area or recommend a more extensive skin examination. A handheld magnifying instrument called a dermatoscope may be used to look more closely at a spot.
Your doctor will explain the examination and seek your consent. You can ask questions or ask to pause at any time.
The consultation is also a chance to discuss sun protection, what changes to watch for and whether follow-up is needed.
If a spot needs further assessment
Not every skin spot needs removal. Depending on the findings, your doctor may recommend monitoring, a biopsy, removal of a lesion or referral to another clinician. A biopsy is a sample of tissue sent to a laboratory for testing.
Any procedure requires a separate discussion about suitability, options and what is involved. A biopsy or removal may require another appointment. Ask how results will be communicated and whether a follow-up appointment is needed.
Before your appointment
- Tell reception that you are booking for a skin check, so the appropriate doctor and appointment can be arranged.
- Make a note of the spots or changes you want to discuss and when you first noticed them.
- Bring a list of your medicines and allergies, and any relevant previous skin-cancer or biopsy reports you have.
- If you have dated photographs showing a change, bring them to discuss with the doctor.
- Ask reception about appointment length, preparation and fees when booking.
